Viareggio is a building and refit town more than a holiday marina: a long line of sheds and quays where hulls are laid up, opened and finished. We work here week in, week out — water systems, air conditioning, galley extraction — both on yachts in build and on boats that have come in for a season of work.
A working port, not a postcard
What arrives in Viareggio is usually a yacht with the panels off, not one dressed for guests. That changes what needs doing and when.
A hull in build has a water system that has never been used: pipework sitting full or half full for months, outlets that have never been run, a calorifier that has been warm and still. That is the ideal condition for a biofilm to establish itself before the owner has even stepped aboard, which is why a first-fill sanitization and a baseline water sample belong in the handover, not after it.
A yacht in for refit has the opposite problem: systems in service for years, with deposits in the air ducts and grease in the galley extraction that nobody has looked at since the last survey. With the joinery already open for other trades, the fan coils and the duct runs are reachable in a way they never are during the season.
Because the equipment stays on the quay and only hoses come aboard, the work fits around the other trades rather than stopping them.

The best window is while she is already out of service
Viareggio works to the refit calendar, not the charter calendar. That gives you a longer, calmer window than almost anywhere else on this coast.
Autumn and winter, when the yacht is already alongside for other work, is when a full job costs the least in lost time: nothing has to be scheduled twice and nothing has to be undone.
If the yacht is being delivered in spring, the water system is better treated and sampled close to handover rather than early in the build, so the report in the owner’s file reflects the system as it will actually be used.
