Loano is a berth-and-stay port: many of the yachts here are not passing through but based, sometimes for the whole year. That pattern creates its own hygiene problem, and its own easy solution.
A yacht that stays put uses less of her own system
It sounds harmless, and it is the single most common cause of the problems we are called about.
A yacht in daily use flushes herself. A yacht sitting on a berth for months does not: the tank is topped up, one or two taps get used when someone comes aboard, and the rest of the network sits still. Those unused branches are where the trouble starts, and nobody notices until the boat is properly used again.
The same applies to the air conditioning. Running it for an hour when someone visits, then stopping it with a wet coil in a closed cabin, is close to the worst thing you can do to a fan coil.
On a long-stay berth the fix is a routine rather than an emergency: treat and sample on a schedule, and the question never becomes urgent.

A sampling schedule agreed in advance costs less than an emergency call in July, and it produces a record over time rather than a single snapshot.
